Annecy International Animation Film Festival
Founded in 1960, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival has become the global benchmark for animation over the years. Every year in June, this prestigious event brings together the biggest names in the industry, highlighting the creativity and variety of animation styles and techniques.
Alongside the official selection, which includes a range of competitive and non-competitive categories, the Festival offers a panoply of special programmes, "Festival" events and events for the general public. Each year, the members of the various juries award official prizes (Cristal) as well as special prizes.
Annecy 2023 in figures 15,820 accreditations, 345 screenings, 475 films in 125 programmes, 50,000 spectators for outdoor screenings at Le Pâquier, 86,000 admissions to cinemas, 185 events, 405 journalists, 102 countries.
Every year since 1984, the Festival has been accompanied by the animation sector's must-attend event: the Professional Film Market, which brings together the entire animation industry, including authors, directors, students, production and distribution companies, channels and platforms, software manufacturers, animation studios, schools, as well as the media and news websites.
The Annecy International Animation Film Market is one of the biggest in the world, with over 15,000 professionals accredited each year. Luxembourg animation is represented with a stand organised by the Fonds National de Soutien à la Production Audiovisuelle (Film Fund Luxembourg).
The other big story of the last decade at the Annecy Festival is the development of digital and immersive experiences. Notably with the creation, in 2016, of the XR@Annecy centre dedicated to "extended reality" (XR) works using animation techniques. From then on, the festival included the presentation of VR (virtual reality) works. The following year, 2017, the festival included a competitive category in the official selection.
The Film Fund Luxembourg has been present at the MIFA since 2001, with a stand located in the heart of the Exhibitors' Area that welcomes under its umbrella representatives of the Luxembourg animation sector such as animation companies and studios, sound and post-production companies and directors and animators in the industry. The Film Fund Luxembourg manages the stand and promotes Luxembourg animation while meeting the needs of Luxembourg producers and talent taking part in the festival. Every year it organises a meeting between Luxembourg professionals and international partners.
