César, Magritte and Austrian Film Prize 2019: they're all in favour of Luxembourg cinema!
César - 1 nomination
The animated feature Pachamama directed by Juan Antin and co-produced by the Luxembourg production company Doghouse Films is nominated in the "Best Animated Feature Film" category at the 44e César ceremony on 22 February 2019.
Initially producers of animated series, this is Pierre Urbain and David Mouraire's first feature film, which they have co-produced with France and Canada. Pachamama is an initiation tale about the persecution of a small pre-Columbian village by the Inca Empire. All the 2D FX animation, layout, 2D sets, mixing and 50% storyboarding were done at the Luxembourg studio, which was involved in the film from the development stage.
The film will compete against Asterix - the secret of the magic potion and Dilili in Paris.
Playing in Luxembourg for 8 weeks, Pachamamaa film for all the family, will be in cinemas until Sunday 27 January.
Magritte - 4 nominations
Es war einmal in Deutschland directed by Sam Garbarski, is a co-production between Luxembourg (Samsa Film), Belgium and Germany. It's an ode to life, a cheeky post-war comedy with plenty of Jewish wit and humour. The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novels Die Teilacher and Machloikes by Michel Bergmann, which the director and author have adapted together.
The film has been nominated for a Magritte award in 4 categories: Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Set Design and Best Costume Design. The awards ceremony will take place on 2 February.
Österreichischer Filmpreis - 15 nominations for 2 films
Angelo by Markus Schleinzer, a co-production between Luxembourg (Amour Fou) and Austria, tells the story of a Nigerian child kidnapped and sold in Europe in the 18e century to become a valet in Vienna. For his 2e film, the Austrian director has drawn on the controversial figure of Angelo Soliman to deliver a historical drama about accepting others. The film, which has already been shortlisted at the Toronto and San Sebastián Film Festivals, is competing in 7 categories for the Austrian Film Prize (Österreichischer Filmpreis): Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Make-up and Best Set Design.
Co-produced by Paul Thiltges Distributionsthe feature film Murer - Anatomie eines Prozessesdirected by Christian Frosch, was nominated for 8 awards: Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Make-up. The courtroom drama recounts the 1963 trial of Austrian SS officer Franz Murer, who was responsible for the atrocities that took place in the Vilnius ghetto between 1941 and 1943. Shot between Vienna and Luxembourg, the film, which stars several Luxembourg actors, won the world premiere of the Austrian Grand Prix Diagonale 2018.
The awards will be presented on 30 January in Vienna.
