Press release:
Between retrospectives and perspectives ... Film Fong celebrates its 20th anniversary!
Press conference at Maison de Cassal on 29 July 2010
Octavie Modert, Minister for Culture, began by reviewing the results of the National Support Fund for Audiovisual Production for 2009. A total of 32 projects received selective financial support for a total budget of €5,386,240 (€420,000 for writing and/or development, i.e. 10 projects, €4,943,000 for theatrical film production, i.e. 21 projects, and €23,240 for international distribution, i.e. 1 project).
17 projects found additional funding through the audiovisual investment certificate mechanism.
The Fund also granted subsidies totalling €26,732.60 as well as promotional aid totalling €90,380 to 16 Luxembourg productions.
The Minister applauded the numerous selections and awards for Luxembourg co-productions at film festivals abroad. She also mentioned the organisation of the Lëtzbuerger Filmpräis, a ceremony that rewards the best artistic and technical contributions, indicating that its 5th edition will take place at the end of 2011.
The Minister concluded her presentation with an update on the digitisation of cinemas in Luxembourg.
François Biltgen, Minister for Communications and the Media, presented a review of the last two decades of Film Fong, which was discussed at the film conference in May 2010 in the presence of film professionals.
The Minister expressed his satisfaction at the success of the first edition of this conference and the gradual evolution of the sector, its great creativity and the level of skills achieved.
The Minister then detailed the means that will be implemented for future developments in favour of the audiovisual production sector, including adapting the operation of aid systems, increasing support for national talent, strengthening training in animation (BTS), the production studios in Dudelange, and national and international promotion.
François Biltgen expressed his satisfaction with the discussions, which had not revealed any fundamental problems with state aid and the way it operates. However, some adjustments need to be made in order to maximise support for the development of Luxembourg films.
The ministers awarded the medal of "Chevalier de l'Ordre grand-ducal de la Couronne de Chêne" to Henri Roanne-Rosenblatt in recognition of his merits, his commitment and his activities to promote the development of European cinema, particularly in Luxembourg.
