The National Selection Committee for the Oscars has chosen the documentary film River Tales/Cuentos del rio by Julie Schroell, produced by the Luxembourg company Calach Films and by the director, to represent the Grand Duchy in the race for the Oscars, for 93e edition of Academy Awards in the category International Feature Film ".

Julie Schroell is a Luxembourg artist who directs and produces films in Luxembourg and Germany (Berlin). She has made a number of documentaries (including De Bauereblues in2011), reports, video clips and corporate films.

River Tales/Cuentos del rio follows a teacher in Nicaragua who co-writes a play with the children of his village, on the banks of the San Juan river, to get them to think about their identity in the face of a Chinese project to build a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A mythical river, the San Juan symbolises 500 years of colonisation and exploitation of natural resources, and has already seen 70 canal projects aborted.

The Luxembourg premiere, initially scheduled for March 2020 as part of the 10e edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival, had to be cancelled due to the health crisis. After being released on VOD in the Lux Film Fest Home EditionThe film was released in Luxembourg on 16 September, and is currently still playing in cinemas.

The film won the Peripheral Visions Award at Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland and the Best Environmental Documentary at Close Up Dokufest in Edinburgh. It has been selected for several documentary festivals across Europe.

Nominations in the "International Feature Film" category of the Academy Awards will be announced on 15 March 2021. The 93e he Oscars ceremony will take place on 25 April (the date is still subject to change depending on developments in the Covid-19 pandemic).

The National Selection Committee for this year's Oscars is made up of six people representing the audiovisual sector:
