The National Selection Committee for the Oscars unanimously selected the Luxembourg film La Supplication to represent the Grand Duchy at the 89e Academy Awards in the Foreign Language Film Award category.

This Luxembourg production (Red Lion), adapted - by director Pol Cruchten - from the novel of the same name by Svetlana Alexievitch, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2015, brings to life the stories of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The film was shot on location in Ukraine, with music by André Mergenthaler and Luma Luma. Other contributors include Ingo Dumlich (chief sound editor), Wolfgang Wesemann (1er assistant director), Harald Rude (1er assistant cameraman), Mark Russel (1er assistant editor), Philip Krieps (head of special effects and animation).

La Supplication celebrated its Luxembourg premiere at the Luxembourg City Film Festival 2016. The documentary on Chernobyl won three international awards (the Cora Coralina from Festival Internacional de Cinema é Video Ambiental in Brazil, the Grand Prize at the Festival international du film d'environnement (Fife) in Paris and the Best Documentary Award at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival in the United States). The film will be broadcast on Arte on 20 September and will then be released in French cinemas from 23 November 2016.
