The Breadwinner directed by Nora Twomey and co-produced by Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions (Stéphan Roelants) and Studio 352  has been nominated for a 2018 Academy Award in the “Best animated feature film” category.

The nomination is the third for Luxembourg company Melusine Productions after Ernest et Célestine in 2014 and Song of the Sea in 2015. Luxembourg’s first Academy Award went to Mr Hublot (Zeilt productions, Best animated short film) in 2014.

The Breadwinner is a co-production between Melusine Productions/Studio 352 (Luxembourg), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland) and Aircraft Pictures (Canada), in partnership with executive producer Angelina Jolie.

Guy Daleiden, CEO of Film Fund Luxembourg: “This is an extremely promising start to the year for the country’s film industry, with an Academy Award nomination for The Breadwinner, the selections of Luxembourg co-productions White Fang (Bidibul Productions) at Sundance, Gutland (Les Films Fauves) at Max Ophüls Preis and IFFR Rotterdam, and Black 47 (Samsa Film) and Bad Banks (Iris Productions) at the Berlinale. These international festival selections and awards nods demonstrate that the substantial effort made by the Film Fund to develop the country’s audiovisual sector is bearing fruit.”
